Zechariah 8 — I Am Returned Unto Zion
Ten times the chapter rings, thus saith the LORD of hosts — a cascade of promises. I was jealous for Zion with great jealousy; I am returned unto Zion, and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: a city of truth, the mountain of the LORD of hosts. Old men and old women shall yet dwell in the streets of Jerusalem, and the streets full of boys and girls playing. If it be marvellous in the eyes of the remnant, should it also be marvellous in mine eyes? saith the LORD of hosts. I will save my people from the east and from the west; they shall be my people, and I will be their God, in truth and in righteousness. The answer to chapter 7's question at last: the fast of the fourth month, and the fifth, and the seventh, and the tenth, shall be to the house of Judah joy and gladness, and cheerful feasts — therefore love the truth and peace. And nations shall come: ten men shall take hold of the skirt of him that is a Jew, saying, We will go with you: for we have heard that God is with you.

Heaven's urban planning includes playgrounds. Old men and women seated in peace (v. 4), children playing in safety — longevity and laughter as twin metrics of shalom. God counts games in the street among His covenant blessings.
After siege, exile, and rubble, the most eloquent proof of restoration is not walls but unafraid children. Judge any society — or church — by whether its weakest can play in its streets.
The remnant's arithmetic said impossible; God answers with a question: should your marvel be mine? Difficulty is an experience of creatures, not of the Creator. Is any thing too hard for the LORD?
Faith's besetting error is projecting our amazement onto God — assuming what staggers us strains Him. The promise-keeping power is measured by the Promiser, never by the audience.
Grace's grammar again: eight promises first (vv. 2-15), then these are the things that ye shall do. The ethics of truth-speaking and just gates are the response to restoration, not its purchase price.
Paul quotes this verse verbatim for the church (Ephesians 4:25) — the city-of-truth standard transferred to the body of Christ, for we are members one of another. Lying inside the community is self-mutilation.
The delegation's question (7:3) finally receives its answer — not stop fasting but prepare for the fasts to become feasts. All four exile-anniversaries of grief are rescheduled as gladness. God's calendar revisions run in one direction for His people: mourning into dancing.
Therefore love the truth and peace — the appended ethic. Celebration is sustained by character; feasts without truth sour back into fasts. The festal future is for lovers of what God loves.
The most winsome missions text in the prophets: ten men of every language gripping one Jew's hem — for we have heard that God is with you. Evangelism at its purest is detected presence; people grasp the garment of those who manifestly walk with God.
The verse looks through the woman who took hold of Christ's hem to the day the nations stream to Zion. God with you — Immanuel — is the whole magnetism; where He is sensed, no recruiting is needed.
Bring your impossible under verse 6: it is marvellous in your eyes — is it in His? Then live the chapter's sequence: receive the promises, practice verse 16 (truth to your neighbor, peace in your gates), and expect verse 19 — God's standing policy is fasts turned to feasts. Above all, covet verse 23: a life whose detectable companion makes others say, we will go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.
I am returned unto Zion, and will dwell in the midst — fulfilled in Immanuel, God with us, of whom the nations have truly heard. He turned the church's deepest fast-day — the cross's Friday — into its everlasting feast, and His is the hem the world still reaches for when His presence in His people is real.
I am returned — the glory Ezekiel watched depart (Ezekiel 10-11) comes back by promise. Restoration is at bottom a Person returning, not a program succeeding; everything else in the chapter flows from the residence.
The renamed city: city of truth. Where God dwells, truth becomes the municipal character. A community's honesty is the architecture His presence builds (vv. 16-17 make it the residents' charge).
