John 14 — In My Father's House

Summary

The night before His crucifixion, Jesus comforts His disciples. He is going to prepare a place. He is the way, the truth, the life. He will send the Comforter. He gives them His peace, not as the world gives.

Key verse

“I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

— John 14:6

Outline
  1. v.1-4 Let not your heart be troubled — many mansions
  2. v.5-11 I am the way, the truth, the life
  3. v.12-14 Greater works; prayer in His name
  4. v.15-17 The promise of the Comforter
  5. v.18-24 Love and obedience inseparable
  6. v.25-31 The peace He gives — not as the world gives
Verse-by-verse
1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

A command, not a suggestion. The trembling heart can be calmed — it is not at the mercy of its own emotions.

Notice the parallel: belief in God is paired directly with belief in Him. Jesus is asking for the same faith that is given to the Father. Only deity could ask this.

2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

"Mansions" — Greek monai, meaning dwelling-places or rooms. Not necessarily palaces; the point is permanence, not luxury. Places to abide forever.

"If it were not so, I would have told you" — Jesus would not let them believe a lie. If heaven were not real, He would have said so. His silence on a thing being false is itself an endorsement of its truth.

"I go to prepare a place for you" — even now, He is preparing. Heaven is not standing empty waiting for arrivals. The Lord Himself is making it ready.

6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

The most exclusive sentence in the New Testament. He is not a way. He is the way.

Three claims in one breath: He is the way (the means), the truth (the message), the life (the result). No other religious figure has ever claimed this — Buddha pointed to enlightenment, Muhammad to a book, Moses to a law. Jesus pointed to Himself.

"No man cometh unto the Father, but by me." Whatever other people say, the Christian cannot soften this without betraying the Person who said it.

16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

"Another" — Greek allon, meaning "another of the same kind." The Holy Spirit is not a lesser substitute for Jesus; He is another like Him.

"Comforter" — Greek Parakletos. Translated variously as Helper, Advocate, Counselor. Literally "one called alongside." The Spirit is always alongside the believer.

"Abide with you for ever" — Jesus was with them in the flesh for three years. The Spirit would be with them, and in them, forever.

27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

The peace He gives is not absence of trouble — He gives it on the very night before the cross. It is the peace He Himself had in the storm, slept through in the boat, would carry through Gethsemane.

"Not as the world giveth." The world's peace is contingent on circumstances. His peace transcends circumstances. The difference is everything.

Application

Three sentences to write down: He is the way — so stop looking elsewhere. He has prepared a place — so stop worrying about the end. His peace, not the world's — so stop chasing the world's comforts when His is offered freely. Three deaths to false hopes, three live promises to trust.

Christ in this chapter

The whole chapter is Christ speaking on the night before His death. The words land with the weight of imminent goodbye. Everything He says here, He paid for the next morning. Every promise was secured at Calvary.
