Zechariah 2 — The Apple of His Eye
The third vision: a man with a measuring line going to measure Jerusalem. But the word runs after him: Jerusalem shall be inhabited as towns without walls for the multitude of men and cattle therein — for I, saith the LORD, will be unto her a wall of fire round about, and will be the glory in the midst of her. Calls follow: Ho, ho, come forth, and flee from the land of the north; deliver thyself, O Zion, that dwellest with the daughter of Babylon — for he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye. Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion: for, lo, I come, and I will dwell in the midst of thee, saith the LORD — and many nations shall be joined to the LORD in that day, and shall be my people. Be silent, O all flesh, before the LORD: for he is raised up out of his holy habitation.

Better than masonry: God Himself the perimeter and God Himself the center — a wall of fire without, the glory within. Defense and delight from the same Presence.
The figure recalls the pillar of fire that stood between Israel and Egypt (Exodus 14:19-20) and anticipates the horses of fire around Elisha. The unwalled church's security has never been her structures.
Most exiles never came home — Babylon was comfortable, commerce was good, and Jerusalem was rubble and risk. The call deliver thyself confronts the deadliest captivity: the one you no longer wish to leave.
Revelation 18:4 reissues the summons — Come out of her, my people. Every generation of God's people dwells near a Babylon whose ease must be fled for a Zion whose walls are fire.
The apple of his eye — the pupil, the body's most guarded and sensitive point. God feels what touches His people as a man feels a finger at his eye; the nerve runs straight to the throne.
Note the sender and the sent: the LORD of hosts... hath sent me. One divine Person dispatched by another against the spoilers — the mystery that unfolds in verses 10-11 and fills the whole book.
Lo, I come — the LORD's own advent announced. The first fulfillment came when the Word was made flesh and dwelt — tabernacled — among us; the final one when the tabernacle of God is with men forever.
Verse 11: many nations shall be joined to the LORD in that day, and shall be my people — Gentiles folded into the covenant formula itself. The dwelling of God in Zion was always designed to gather the world.
After the singing, silence. When God rises from His holy habitation to act, the fitting posture of all flesh — Israel and nations alike — is hushed awe. Reverence is joy's other lung.
Habakkuk heard the same: the LORD is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him. Before His movements in history, commentary stills; worship waits.
Stop measuring what God can rebuild by the size of the ruins — His Jerusalems outgrow every line we stretch. Settle your security where verse 5 puts it: not in walls you can audit but in the Presence that surrounds and indwells. And if Babylon has grown comfortable, hear the Ho, ho of verse 6 — comfort in the wrong city is captivity with good catering.
Lo, I come, and I will dwell in the midst of thee — fulfilled when Christ tabernacled among us (John 1:14), fulfilled in the church He indwells, and consummated when the tabernacle of God is with men (Revelation 21:3). The One sent after the glory by the LORD of hosts is the Son, sent by the Father, guarding His own as the pupil of His eye.
Run — the correction is urgent. The young man's measuring line assumed a city of restorable, modest dimensions; God's plans overflow every survey. Unbelief's besetting error is measuring God's future by present rubble.
Towns without walls — growth beyond fortification. The vision leaps past Nehemiah's wall to a Jerusalem too large for one, fulfilled in the ever-expanding city of God whose gates are never shut (Revelation 21:25).
