1 Thessalonians 3 — That No Man Should Be Moved by These Afflictions
Unable to bear the suspense, Paul sent Timothy to establish and comfort the Thessalonians concerning their faith, lest the persecutions move them. Timothy returned with good news of their faith and love. Paul is comforted and lives again to hear they stand fast. He prays night and day to see them and to perfect what is lacking in their faith, that the Lord would make them increase in love.
“For now we live, if ye stand fast in the Lord.”
— 1 Thessalonians 3:8
- v.1-5 Timothy sent to establish them
- v.6-10 Timothy's good report; Paul's comfort
- v.11-13 Paul's prayer for their increase in love
Lest the tempter have tempted you. Paul's pastoral anxiety. He knew Satan targets new believers under pressure, seeking to make them abandon the faith. His concern was real and urgent.
A reminder that the tempter is active, especially against those under affliction. The pressure of persecution is one of his favorite tools — to make suffering believers conclude the faith is not worth the cost. Pastoral care guards against this.
Now we live, if ye stand fast. The intensity of Paul's pastoral love. Their perseverance was so bound up with his own sense of life that he says he lives when they stand firm. Their spiritual health was his very life.
The mark of a true shepherd. The well-being of the flock is not a professional concern but a matter of life and death to the heart of the one who loves them. Paul's joy rose and fell with their faithfulness.
Night and day praying exceedingly. Paul's intercession was constant and intense. Perfect that which is lacking in your faith — even a commendable faith has gaps to be filled, growth to be completed.
No believer's faith is complete in this life; there is always that which is lacking to be perfected. The healthy Christian welcomes the filling of those gaps through teaching, fellowship, and growth. Maturity is a lifelong project.
Increase and abound in love. Paul's prayer is for growing, overflowing love — first toward fellow believers, then toward all men. Christian love is not to be confined to the household of faith but to extend to everyone.
The progression matters — love one toward another (within the church) and toward all men (the world). The believer's love begins with the family of faith but does not stop there. It abounds outward to all.
Stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness. The goal of the growth in love — established, blameless hearts at Christ's coming. Love and holiness are bound together; growing love produces increasing holiness.
At the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Every chapter of this letter ends pointing to Christ's return. The whole horizon of the Christian life is the day He comes. Present growth is aimed at that future appearing.
When affliction comes, remember Paul's words — we are appointed thereunto. Suffering is not a sign that you have left the path; often it is a sign that you are on it. The tempter will whisper that the faith is not worth the cost. Stand fast. The afflictions were appointed, foretold, and are working toward an established, holy heart that will stand blameless when Christ comes. Do not be moved.
The chapter ends, like every chapter of this letter, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints (v.13). The afflictions of the present, the growth in love, the establishment in holiness — all are oriented toward that day. Christ's return is the goal that gives meaning to present suffering and present growth. The Thessalonians stood fast under persecution because they were waiting for Him.
We are appointed thereunto. Afflictions are not accidents in the Christian life; they are appointed. The believer should not be shaken by suffering as though something strange were happening (1 Peter 4:12).
A vital truth for new believers especially. Suffering does not mean God has abandoned you or that you have done something wrong. It is part of the appointed path. Forewarned of this, the believer is not moved when affliction comes.
