Romans 7 — O Wretched Man That I Am! Who Shall Deliver Me?
The law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth. The woman bound by the law to her husband as long as he liveth. Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ. We are delivered from the law, that we should serve in newness of spirit. Is the law sin? God forbid. I had not known sin, but by the law. The law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good. The good that I would I do not. O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

In my flesh dwelleth no good thing. A bracing self-assessment. The flesh — unaided human nature — has no spiritual good in it.
The Christian who imagines his old self can be partnered with for righteousness has not read this verse. Whatever good is done is by the Spirit, not the flesh.
The cry of a believer honest about his ongoing struggle with sin. Wretched is the right word for the experience of indwelling sin under sanctification.
The cry is not despair; it is the prelude to deliverance. The next verse names the Deliverer.
I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. The answer arrives. The wretched man is delivered through Christ.
The verse honestly names the divided experience that persists. Sanctification is real and incomplete this side of glory.
Verse 24's honesty frees you. If your Christian life feels like a struggle, the apostle has been there. The cry is not failure; it is the diagnosis that drives you to the Deliverer. Cry the verse; then turn to verse 25.
Romans 7 honors the believer's real struggle with indwelling sin and names Christ as the only Deliverer. The chapter does not minimize the difficulty; it points to the One whose work resolves it. I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord is the chapter's answer to the chapter's cry.
The law's function is diagnostic, not curative. Without it, sin would be unrecognized in detail.
Thou shalt not covet. The commandment that reaches inside. Paul names the inward one because it shows the law's thoroughness.
