Mark 5 — Be Not Afraid, Only Believe
Across the lake Jesus meets the Gadarene demoniac — naked, raging, dwelling in tombs — and casts out a legion of demons into a herd of swine that plunges into the sea. The man is found clothed and in his right mind. Recrossing, He is met by Jairus, a synagogue ruler whose daughter is dying. On the way a woman with a twelve-year hemorrhage touches His garment and is healed. Word comes that the girl is dead. Be not afraid, only believe. He takes her by the hand: Talitha cumi. She rises.

Twelve years of suffering, every doctor tried, every shekel spent — and still her faith was steady enough to believe a touch of His garment would do it. Faith and weariness are not opposites; the same heart may carry both.
She did not even ask. She reasoned, reached, and touched. Christ honored the reaching though He drew her out into open confession afterward (v.33) — the secret faith was real, but the public testimony completes it.
Daughter. The only place in the Gospels Christ addresses a woman so — and to one society had pushed to the margins as unclean. He gives her the dignity her uncleanness had cost her: a Father, a name, a place in His family.
Thy faith hath made thee whole. The hem did not heal her; the One the hem belonged to did, through the faith that reached. The power was Christ's; the channel was faith.
The hardest moment — the daughter is dead, the messengers have come, the case is over. To the father carrying this news Christ says be not afraid, only believe. Five words against the worst report Jairus would receive in life.
Christ does not minimize the situation; He enlarges Jairus's view of who is with him. The girl is dead, yes — and the Lord of life is walking beside the father to the house. The reason not to be afraid is not the smallness of the trouble but the largeness of the One present.
Talitha cumi. Aramaic — the homely speech of a mother to her child in the morning. Little girl, get up. Death undone by tenderness, not pageantry.
He took her by the hand. In Jewish law touching a corpse rendered a person unclean. But uncleanness flows from death to life only — here life flowed from Christ to corpse, and she rose. The Lord of life does not become defiled; He undoes defilement.
Verse 36 is a sword for the worst news. The messengers had said the case was closed; Christ said only believe. There are moments when human counsel ends with it is over — a diagnosis, a funeral, a marriage collapsed. In those moments Christ's five words are not denial of reality; they are reminder of His. Be not afraid; the One walking with you is the Lord of life.
Three impossible cases — a demon-ruined man, an incurable woman, a dead child — and Christ undoes all three in one chapter. Mark stacks the demonstrations because he wants the reader to settle the question: there is no domain too far gone for Him. The same Lord who said Talitha cumi over a corpse will say it over yours, and you will rise.
Three words restore the man's whole humanity — sitting (not raging), clothed (covered), in his right mind (sane). The transformation is total; the picture is of a person made whole.
They were afraid. Not of the man they had feared before, but of the One who could do this. Sometimes the deliverance of a sinner frightens those around him more than the sin did. The townspeople preferred their swine and their fear of demons to a Christ who could outdo both.
