1 Corinthians 8 — Take Heed Lest By Any Means This Liberty of Yours Become a Stumblingblock
As touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth. There is none other God but one. To us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him. Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge. Some with conscience of the idol eat it as a thing offered unto an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled. But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak. Wherefore, if meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth.

A compact Christological confession. One God — the Father. One Lord — Jesus Christ. Together they are the one God of the Shema, distinguished as Persons.
By whom are all things. The Son is named as the agent of creation. The verse is one of the New Testament's clearest statements of His divine identity.
Christian liberty is real and limited. Limited by the brother's conscience. The strong's freedom is to be governed by the weak's fragility.
A check on rights-talk. The Christian asks not only am I free to? but should I, given my brother? The second question is mature.
Verse 9 reframes Christian rights. Yes, you are free; no, you are not free to use freedom carelessly. The brother whose conscience would stumble is your concern. Liberty exists to serve love, not to compete with it.
Verse 6 places Christ at the center — one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things. The chapter's ethics flow from this identity. The Lord of creation is the Lord of the believer's liberty; His character is the standard of its use.
Knowledge puffeth up. The simple fact of knowing more than another can inflate. The remedy is not less knowledge but more love.
Charity edifieth. Love builds. The combination of right knowledge and operative love is what the church needs.
