Revelation 16 — It Is Done
A great voice — Go and pour out the vials of the wrath of God. The first — a noisome and grievous sore. The second — the sea becomes as blood; every living soul died. The third — rivers and fountains become blood. The fourth — the sun scorches men with fire. The fifth — the kingdom of the beast full of darkness. The sixth — the Euphrates dried up for the kings of the east; unclean spirits like frogs go to gather kings to Armageddon. The seventh — It is done. A great earthquake; great Babylon comes in remembrance before God.

A surprise interruption in the middle of the vial-pouring — Christ's own voice. I come as a thief — the same warning given to Sardis (3:3) and in the Olivet discourse.
Keepeth his garments. The righteousness of the saints (19:8) is to be kept. Stripping happens to the careless; the watchful stand clothed.
It is done. Three words — the wrath of God against the unrepenting world is fully poured out. The companion phrase will appear in 21:6 — it is done for the new creation. The first ends judgment; the second inaugurates glory.
A counterpoint to Christ's it is finished on the cross (John 19:30). At Calvary the substitutionary sentence was paid; at the seventh vial the rejected sentence reaches its end.
Verse 15 is Christ's middle-of-the-judgments reminder to His own — blessed is he that watcheth. Even in seasons that look like history's collapse, the believer's call is the same: stay watching, stay clothed in the righteousness given by His grace. The personal address inside the storm is the comfort of His care.
In the middle of the bowls Christ speaks personally — behold, I come as a thief. He is not absent from the chapter's scenes; He is the One returning. It is done echoes it is finished; the cross finished the substitutionary work, and the vials finish the unrejected wrath. The Christian rests in the first finished and is spared the second.
The altar speaks — the same altar from which the saints' prayers and the martyrs' cries rose. The judgments are now described as true and righteous; God has not erred.
A defense against the modern instinct to call God unjust for judging. The altar — where the martyrs lie (6:9) — agrees with the verdict. The ones most wronged endorse the justice.
