John 15 — Abide In Me, and I In You
I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit He taketh away; every branch that beareth fruit He purgeth. Abide in me, and I in you... without me ye can do nothing. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. I have called you friends. Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you. If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. They will hate you for my name's sake.

A prayer promise with two conditions. Abiding in Him; His words abiding in us. The asking that aligns with these flows from a shaped heart.
The verse is not a blank check. The branch in the vine asks what the vine would ask. The will is conformed before the asking is honored.
Christ's commentary on what He is about to do. The greatest love is the laying down of life — and He does it for friends, not strangers.
Friends. The next verse names His friends as those who do what He commands. Friendship with Christ is not casual; it is the bond formed by obedience.
A correction of every self-congratulating salvation story. Ye have not chosen me. He chose first; the disciple's yes was the response.
Ordained you... that ye should go. Election is for mission. Chosen ones are sent ones. The fruit is the purpose of the choosing.
Verse 5 settles your self-sufficiency. Without me ye can do nothing. Anything in your life produced apart from Christ is sawdust. Today's work, today's relationships, today's ministry — all flow from abiding or wither without it. Abide first; everything else follows.
John 15's vine image places Christ at the center of every fruitful Christian life. He is the source; the disciple is the channel. Apart from Him, nothing; in Him, much fruit. The chapter is the upper-room exposition of dependent discipleship — and the loving Friend who would soon lay down His life.
Without me ye can do nothing. The fundamental dependence of the Christian life. Not little; nothing. Branches do not produce; they receive and bear what the vine produces through them.
Abideth. Not visits — abides. The Christian's posture toward Christ is residence, not occasional contact.
