John 19 — It Is Finished
Pilate scourges Him. The soldiers — crown of thorns, purple robe — Hail, King of the Jews! Pilate — Behold the man! The chief priests — Crucify him, crucify him. By our law He ought to die because He made Himself the Son of God. Pilate is afraid. Behold your King! They cry — we have no king but Caesar. They led Him away to be crucified. Golgotha. The title — JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. The seamless coat. Woman, behold thy son... Behold thy mother. I thirst. It is finished. He bowed His head and gave up the ghost. They brake not His legs — but pierced His side; blood and water. Joseph of Arimathaea and Nicodemus bury Him.

Christ to Pilate. The procurator's authority over Him is only what heaven has permitted. The proceedings are under God's ordination.
A perspective for unjust trials. Whatever human authority does to the believer is bounded by what God has allowed. The verse does not excuse the injustice; it situates it.
It is finished. Greek tetelestai — the word stamped on paid bills, paid in full. The debt is settled. There is nothing left for the believer to pay.
Gave up the ghost. Active verb. He yielded; He was not overpowered. The death was His choice, His timing.
Blood and water. Medical writers have read this as confirmation of His death. Theologians have read it as the twin streams of cleansing and life. Both are honored.
The pierced side has been an image of love's open access. The wound that proved death is the doorway into life. The blood and water both come from the cross.
Verse 30 is the single word that ends every striving to earn salvation. Tetelestai — paid in full. If you have been trying to settle your account with God by performance, the chapter's most important word for you is finished. He paid; you receive. Stop adding to the bill.
John 19 is the cross according to John. The royal title above Him, the seamless coat, the words to His mother, the thirst, the finished cry, the pierced side. Every detail is the Lamb of God taking away the world's sin (1:29). The man Pilate showed to the crowd is the Saviour the chapter shows to every reader.
Behold the man. Pilate meant to elicit pity; the words have echoed as theology. The crown of thorns wears the curse of the ground (Genesis 3:18); the purple robe parodies kingship. He is the second Adam, wearing the curse the first one provoked.
Look at the Man. Whatever theology you have or have not learned, look at the figure in the chapter. This is the Saviour offered.
