Matthew 23 — Woe Unto You, Scribes and Pharisees, Hypocrites
Christ's longest sustained denunciation. To the multitudes — observe what they teach (Moses' seat) but do not do their works. They bind heavy burdens, love places of honor. Seven woes — for shutting up the kingdom, devouring widows' houses, making proselytes worse than themselves, blind guides on oaths, tithing herbs while neglecting weightier matters, cleaning the outside, garnishing the prophets' tombs while killing the living prophets. The lament — O Jerusalem, Jerusalem... how often would I have gathered thy children together... and ye would not.

The Pharisees tithed garden herbs while neglecting justice, mercy, and faith. The trivial was meticulously kept; the major was let slip. The order matters.
Not to leave the other undone. Christ does not abolish the small obediences; He insists on the larger ones alongside. Faithful in much and in little, but not little instead of much.
The order of cleansing — inside first, then outside. Outside reform that leaves the inside untouched is mere management. Inside cleansing washes through to the outside.
A diagnostic for any religious life. If the public performance is excellent and the private life is unchanged, the chapter's woe applies. The Christian cleanses the inside first.
The chapter's tenderness in its bitterest moment. The same Lord who pronounces the woes weeps over the city. The anger is the form His love takes when His invitation is refused.
And ye would not. The two-word epitaph of the lost. The willingness to come was missing, not the will of Christ to gather.
Verse 26 is a private application. Cleanse the inside first. Habitual sin, hidden bitterness, secret pride — Christ's prescription is inward washing, not outward management. Performance that hides rot is the woe-warning of the chapter. Bring the inside to Him.
The Lord who pronounces the woes is the One who weeps over Jerusalem in the same chapter. He has come to gather chicks under His wings; they would not. The cross is days away — the wings will stretch over the place that killed Him. The terrible woes and the tender lament are the same voice.
The kingdom's constant reversal. Greatness is downward, not upward. The verse defeats every form of religious self-promotion.
Where it is applied honestly, the chapter's woes do not strike. Where rank, title, and platform begin to matter more than service, the woes draw nearer.
