Matthew 28 — Lo, I Am With You Alway, Even Unto the End of the World
In the end of the sabbath the women come to the sepulchre. An angel descends, rolls back the stone — He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Tell the disciples. Jesus meets them — All hail. They hold His feet and worship. The guard reports to the chief priests, who bribe them with a lie — His disciples came by night, and stole him away. In Galilee the eleven meet Him. All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.

All power. Total authority — in heaven, on earth, everywhere. The risen Christ owns all things. The Great Commission flows from this authority; the church's mission rides on the King's endorsement.
The verse settles the question of Christ's sovereignty. Whatever earthly powers stand against the gospel, the One whose hands were nailed now holds all authority.
The Great Commission. All nations — the scope is global. Baptizing... in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost — Trinitarian initiation; the convert is brought into the life of the Triune God.
Teach — make disciples, not converts only. The full process of discipleship is in view, not just decision. Christianity is a lifetime under instruction.
To observe all things. Not select things. The whole teaching of Christ is the disciples' curriculum. Pick-and-choose Christianity is not the kind Christ commissioned.
I am with you alway. The Gospel that began with Emmanuel, God with us (1:23) ends with I am with you alway. The bookends hold the whole. The same Christ who entered the world to be with us promises to be with His own to its end.
Verse 20 is the disciple's lifelong assurance. Whatever today asks of you, He is with you. Not when you have done it well; not when conditions are favorable; alway, even unto the end. Build the day on that. The Christ who said it is the Christ in whom all authority rests; His promise does not soften.
Matthew ends as it began — with God with us. Emmanuel in chapter 1 is I am with you in chapter 28. Between the bookends, the King has ministered, suffered, died, and risen. He sends His disciples to the ends of the earth with His authority behind them and His presence with them. The Gospel of the King is the Gospel of the King who has not finished — the same Lord is doing the same work through us today.
The most important sentence in human history. Without the resurrection, the cross is a tragedy; with it, the cross is the world's salvation.
As he said. He had told them — Matthew 16:21, 17:23, 20:19. The empty tomb did not surprise heaven; it had been on the calendar. The women came to anoint a corpse and met the risen Lord.
