Revelation 12 — They Overcame Him By the Blood of the Lamb

Summary

A great wonder — a woman clothed with the sun, the moon under her feet, a crown of twelve stars. She is with child. A great red dragon, seven heads, ten horns, seven crowns, his tail drawing a third of the stars. The dragon stands before the woman to devour her child. She brings forth a man child to rule the nations with a rod of iron. He is caught up to God. The woman flees to the wilderness. War in heaven — Michael and the dragon. The dragon is cast out. They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death. The dragon persecutes the woman; goes to war with the rest of her seed.

Key verse

“And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.”

— Revelation 12:11

Outline
  1. v.1-6 The woman, the child, the dragon
  2. v.7-12 War in heaven; the dragon cast out
  3. v.13-17 The dragon's persecution
Verse-by-verse
5 And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.

The Messianic identification is unmistakable — rule all nations with a rod of iron is Psalm 2. The child is Christ; the woman represents the believing community out of which He came.

Caught up unto God. The ascension. The dragon's strategy to destroy at birth has been overcome by enthronement.

Cross-references Psalm 2:9 · Acts 1:9 · Revelation 19:15 · Isaiah 9:6-7
9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

Four names for one enemy — dragon, old serpent (Genesis 3), Devil (slanderer), Satan (adversary). The same evil personality across all of Scripture.

Deceiveth the whole world. His primary weapon is the lie. Beneath every false teaching and corrupting culture is the deceiver.

11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.

The most encouraging verse against the enemy in the Bible. Three weapons — the blood of the Lamb, the word of their testimony, they loved not their lives unto the death.

The same three are still operative. The blood that defeated the accuser still defeats him; the spoken testimony still cuts; the willingness to die for Christ still breaks the enemy's grip.

Application

Verse 11 is your manual against the enemy. When you are accused — by him, by others, or by your own heart — the answers are these three. Plead the blood; speak the testimony; hold life loosely. The accuser fled before each one; he flees them still.

Christ in this chapter

Revelation 12 traces the cosmic conflict around Christ — His birth, His exaltation, the dragon's rage against His people. The chapter situates every Christian conflict in the larger war whose decisive battle has already been won. The blood of the Lamb defeats the dragon; the same blood defeats every accusation against us.
