Hebrews 1 — The Brightness of His Glory, and the Express Image of His Person
God who spoke in many portions and in many ways to the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken to us by His Son — whom He hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also He made the worlds. The Son — the brightness of God's glory, the express image of His person, upholding all things by the word of His power, who when He had by Himself purged our sins sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high. Better than the angels — they worship Him; His throne is for ever and ever; the heavens shall perish but Thou remainest.

Four clauses, each a sermon. Brightness of his glory — the radiance of God shines from the Son. Express image of his person — exact representation of His being. Upholding all things — the universe runs on His word. By himself purged our sins — He paid in person.
Sat down. The seat is the sign of a finished work (cf. Levitical priests who stood, 10:11). Hebrews' thesis is here in seed — Christ has done what no priest before Him could.
The Father calls the Son God. Psalm 45 quoted as Trinitarian theology. The opening chapter has put Christ's deity past dispute.
Sceptre of righteousness. The kingdom He rules is built on right. Where He reigns, justice issues — not the world's parodies, but the kind a Christ rules with.
Angels are servants; the saved are heirs. The chapter's comparison ends with the lower role of angels honored — they serve the heirs of salvation. Christians outrank angels in inheritance.
A staggering implication. The believer is the one the angels serve. Treat them less as objects of fascination and more as fellow-servants of the same King.
Verse 3 is one of the densest verses in Scripture. Read it slowly. Each clause is for adoration: He shines, He represents, He upholds, He purged, He sat down. The whole gospel and Christology arrives in one breath. Make this verse a doorway into worship today.
Hebrews opens by establishing Christ's identity — the divine Son, the agent of creation, the radiance of glory, the purger of sin, the enthroned heir. The whole book will trace what this Christ does as the great High Priest. Chapter 1 is the foundation; the rest is the building.
In these last days — the eschatological era opened by Christ. From Pentecost onward we live in the last days, however long they extend.
Spoken... by his Son. The Son is not one more prophet; He is the final and full speech of God. After Him the Father has nothing further to add by way of supplementary revelation.
