Hebrews 2 — Made Like Unto His Brethren
Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed lest we let them slip. How shall we escape if we neglect so great salvation? But we see Jesus, made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour, that He by the grace of God should taste death for every man. For it became Him to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. Both He that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one. He took not on Him the nature of angels but the seed of Abraham. Wherefore in all things it behoved Him to be made like unto His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful high priest.

We see Jesus. The corrective for many discouragements. Things look grim, the world unsubdued — yet we see Jesus, already crowned, already on the throne.
Taste death for every man. The atonement's scope and effectiveness. He tasted what we should have. The cup was emptied so His people would never drink it.
Christ took flesh to die — that was the point of the incarnation. He could not die as deity unmixed; He took blood so that He could shed it.
Destroy him that had the power of death. The devil's weapon was death; Christ disarmed him by taking the weapon and walking through. Resurrection turned the executioner's blade into a key.
Made like unto his brethren. The Christology Hebrews will build on. A priest must share what he represents; Christ took flesh to qualify.
Merciful and faithful. Two attributes for the priest who handles us. Mercy meets our need; faithfulness keeps the office. The Christian comes to a Priest who is both.
Verse 9's opening line is a discipline. We see Jesus. When the world's subjugation seems impossible, fix your eyes on the already-crowned Christ. The reign is begun. The chapter's comfort is that the King who suffered is the same King who is glorified — and yours is the same King.
Chapter 2 is the chapter of the Incarnation in Hebrews. The Son who outshines the angels in chapter 1 is made a little lower than them in chapter 2 — so that He can die. The two chapters together show the height and depth of His Person, both essential to the High Priest the book is unfolding.
Neglect — not active rejection, but quiet indifference. The verse warns the drifting more than the rebelling. Slow neglect is enough to lose by.
So great salvation. The greatness of what is offered makes the carelessness inexcusable. If a fly were offered the world it would not deserve excuse for ignoring it; how much less the salvation purchased by the Son.
