Psalms 75 — God Is the Judge: He Putteth Down One, and Setteth Up Another

Summary

Unto thee, O God, do we give thanks. When I shall receive the congregation I will judge uprightly. I said unto the fools, Deal not foolishly. For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another.

Key verse

“For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another.”

— Psalm 75:6-7

Outline
  1. v.1-3 God will judge uprightly
  2. v.4-10 God puts down and sets up
Verse-by-verse
6 For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south.

Neither east, west, south. The compass excludes — three directions of human striving.

The verse rules out networking, location, strategy as the ultimate source. The next verse names the real source.

Cross-references Daniel 2:21 · Romans 13:1 · Proverbs 21:1 · 1 Samuel 2:7-8
7 But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another.

God is the judge. The one who decides promotion. The verse is a check on careerism.

A peace for the overlooked. He will set up the right one at the right time.
