2 Corinthians 10 — Casting Down Imaginations, and Every High Thing
Paul turns to answer his detractors, who say his letters are weighty but his bodily presence weak. He beseeches by the meekness and gentleness of Christ. Though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: for the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds; casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. He refuses to measure himself by men measuring themselves among themselves — he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth.

The church's arsenal contains no carnal weapons — no manipulation, money, politics, or force. Its weapons are the word, prayer, truth, and the Spirit — and these alone are mighty through God.
Strong holds — fortified systems of thought and resistance in which men barricade themselves against God. Carnal weapons can coerce behavior; only divine weapons demolish fortresses of the mind.
The battlefield is the mind. Imaginations — reasonings, speculations, proud arguments raised like towers against the knowledge of God. The gospel does not bypass the intellect; it conquers it.
Every thought taken captive — warfare at the granular level. Holiness is fought thought by thought; the believer polices the borders of the mind and marches each prisoner to the feet of Christ.
The false apostles graded themselves on a curve of their own making. Self-referential measurement always returns a passing grade — and is always not wise, because the standard is wrong.
Comparison is the native air of pride. It produces either vanity (I exceed them) or despair (they exceed me) — both irrelevant, since God measures by His rule alone (v. 13).
Quoting Jeremiah 9:23-24 — let not the wise glory in wisdom, nor the mighty in might, nor the rich in riches, but in knowing the Lord. One boast is permitted, and it empties the boaster.
The verse beheads both self-commendation (v. 12) and man-pleasing. Paul's ministry rises or falls on one verdict only: whom the Lord commendeth (v. 18).
Name the stronghold — the fortified pattern of thought where you have long resisted God: a resentment rationalized, a fear enthroned, a self-image defended. Verse 4 says carnal weapons (willpower, distraction, self-help) cannot raze it. Take up the divine ones — Scripture aimed at it, prayer sustained against it — and begin the verse 5 discipline: one thought at a time, marched captive to Christ.
Paul wages war in the meekness and gentleness of Christ (v. 1) — the conqueror who rode a donkey and won by a cross. Every thought taken captive is brought to the obedience of Christ: the goal of all spiritual warfare is His lordship over the inner man.
Before defending his authority Paul names his model — the meekness and gentleness of Christ. Even apostolic confrontation must wear the temper of the Lamb.
His critics mocked the gap between bold letters and an unimpressive presence. Paul will answer, but the weapon he reaches for first is meekness — strength under harness, not weakness.
