Mark 16 — He Is Risen; He Is Not Here
Very early on the first day of the week the women come to the tomb with spices, wondering who will roll away the stone. They find it rolled back, a young man in white inside — Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here. They flee, trembling. Jesus appears first to Mary Magdalene, then to two on the road, then to the eleven, rebuking their unbelief. The great commission: Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. Signs follow. He is received up into heaven and sits at the right hand of God; they go forth and preach everywhere, the Lord working with them.

The most important sentence in human history reduced to four words — he is risen. Christianity stands or falls here. Without this, the cross is a tragedy; with it, the cross is the world's salvation.
Behold the place. The empty space is evidence. He had been there; He was no longer. The resurrection is not a metaphor in the disciples' minds; it is a vacated tomb in space and time.
The Great Commission in Mark's form. Go — movement. All the world — scope. Preach the gospel — the message, not opinion. Every creature — reach.
The four words bind the church's mission. Whoever Christ has gripped is sent. Withholding the gospel from any people is incompatible with this verse; so is preaching anything other than the gospel.
Sat on the right hand of God. The seat of finished work and ruling authority (Hebrews 1:3, 10:12). Christ did not return to heaven to rest from defeat but to reign from victory.
The Christian lives between His ascension and His return. The seated Christ is the present King of His church and the world; the standing Christ (Acts 7:55-56) rises for His martyrs; the coming Christ (Mark 13:26) will descend to make all things His openly.
The Gospel ends with the church on the move. They went forth — obedience. The Lord working with them — divine partnership. The book that began the beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ ends with the gospel still going forth.
The Lord working with them. The work was His, even when done through them. Every faithful gospel ministry is a place where Christ is doing the actual labor through human hands. The encouragement is for every quiet worker who has wondered whether anyone notices — He notices, and He is the one doing the work.
The women came with a problem (who shall roll us away the stone?) and walked into a glory they had not anticipated. Often that is how Christ meets the worried believer — He answers the smaller question by showing the bigger reality. Bring your worry to Him; you may find that what you came to manage He has already conquered, and the bigger news will swallow the smaller fear.
Mark begins the beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God; it ends with the risen Son of God at the right hand of God and His servants going forth with the gospel He purchased on the cross. The empty tomb is the link. Everything Mark has shown — His authority, His teaching, His miracles, His cross — is vindicated and continued by this verse: he is risen. The whole Gospel hangs there. So does every Christian life and every Christian mission.
They came with a problem they could not solve. The stone was beyond their strength. They came anyway.
They did not know the stone was already rolled. Many anxieties of the believer are about obstacles God has already removed; we just have not arrived at the tomb yet. Walk toward Him with the problem; you may find the worry already settled when you get there.
