John 2 — Whatsoever He Saith Unto You, Do It
The third day a marriage in Cana of Galilee. The wine runs out. Mary — they have no wine. Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. Six waterpots of stone; fill the waterpots with water. The governor of the feast tastes; thou hast kept the good wine until now. This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana. He went down to Capernaum. He went up to Jerusalem; in the temple He made a scourge of small cords and drove them all out. Make not my Father's house an house of merchandise. Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. But He spake of the temple of His body.

The unwitting parable of the kingdom. The world serves the best first; Christ saves the best for last. The Christian life often runs the opposite of the world's expectation.
A picture of the gospel. The flavor improves; the joy deepens; the best wine is the wine of the Lamb's supper still to come.
Christ's first cryptic resurrection prediction. They thought of stones; He spoke of His body. They missed it then; the disciples remembered it after He rose (v.22).
A pattern. Sometimes Christ's words make sense only later. Trust the saying when given; trust the meaning when revealed.
Verse 5 is the Christian's posture in a single sentence. Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. Pick one thing Christ has said that you have been negotiating with. Stop negotiating. Do it. The chapter begins with obedience and ends in glory.
John's first miracle begins his pattern of signs pointing to who Christ is — water to wine signals the new and better thing He has come to bring. The same chapter ends with Him as the true temple. The Gospel's Christology is set in motion: Christ is the joy of the wedding and the dwelling place of God.
Mary's last recorded words in the Gospels. They are not about herself; they redirect attention to her Son. Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.
A line that doubles as a discipleship motto. The Christian life is reducible to this — whatsoever He says, do it.
