Zechariah 13 — Smite the Shepherd, and the Sheep Shall Be Scattered
In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness. The idols' names cut off, the false prophets ashamed of their visions — wounded in the house of their friends. Then the sword awakes: Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the LORD of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered: and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones. Two parts cut off and die; the third part is brought through the fire, refined as silver is refined and tried as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God.

Cleansing has consequences: where the fountain flows, idols lose even their names — not regulated but unremembered. Forgiveness and purgation travel together; a pardoned land does not keep its shrines as souvenirs.
False prophecy and the unclean spirit behind it are expelled in the same sweep — deception named as a spiritual force, not merely a human industry. Truth's victory is an exorcism as much as an argument.
The man that is my fellow — literally the man of my union, my equal: the LORD of hosts names the Shepherd as His peer. And the command to the sword is God's own: smite the shepherd. Calvary was not an accident absorbed but a stroke ordained — it pleased the LORD to bruise him.
Jesus quoted this verse on the night of His betrayal: All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd... (Matthew 26:31). The scattering of the disciples in Gethsemane was the verse coming true within the hour.
Through the fire — not around it, and not consumed by it. The refiner's purpose governs the furnace's temperature: silver refined, gold tried, dross gone, metal kept. Affliction in covenant hands is metallurgy, not destruction.
The chapter ends in the oldest formula made new: It is my people... The LORD is my God — covenant vows exchanged like wedding rings on the far side of the fire. The refining produces what God was after all along: a people whose calling and His answering interlock.
Use the fountain as a fountain: not an occasional resort after long guilt, but the continuously open cleansing of 1 John 1:9 — confess promptly, wash daily, for sin and uncleanness. When the fire comes, read it by verse 9: you are being brought through, as metal a refiner intends to keep. And let the chapter's exchange become your daily liturgy: He says my people; answer aloud, the LORD is my God.
Two verses here are pillars of Christology: the fountain opened — His pierced side releasing blood and water for sin and uncleanness — and the sword awakened against the man that is my fellow: Scripture's own testimony that the smitten Shepherd is the equal of the LORD of hosts. Jesus claimed the verse in Gethsemane; the scattering, the smiting, and the regathered, refined flock all unfold from that night.
The mourning of 12:10 issues in the fountain of 13:1 — repentance leads straight to cleansing. Not a laver to be carried to, but a fountain: spontaneous, continuous, inexhaustible. Grace under pressure from below, never running dry.
For sin and for uncleanness — guilt and defilement both: the double cure of the hymn, be of sin the double cure, cleanse me from its guilt and power. Opened at the cross, the fountain has never been sealed since.
