Micah 5 — But Thou, Bethlehem Ephratah

Summary

Gather thyself in troops, O daughter of troops. They shall smite the judge of Israel with a rod upon the cheek. But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. Therefore will he give them up, until the time that she which travaileth hath brought forth. He shall stand and feed in the strength of the Lord. And this man shall be the peace.

Key verse

“But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.”

— Micah 5:2

Outline
  1. v.1-6 The ruler from Bethlehem
  2. v.7-15 The remnant among the nations
Verse-by-verse
2 But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.

The most precise of Messianic prophecies — His birthplace named seven centuries before. The scribes quoted it to Herod (Matthew 2:6).

Whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. The Ruler from Bethlehem is the eternal One. The verse asserts pre-existence in plain words.

Cross-references Matthew 2:6 · John 7:42 · Luke 2:4-7 · John 1:1-3
5 And this man shall be the peace, when the Assyrian shall come into our land.

This man shall be the peace. Not bring peace — be it. Peace is His person, not just His product.

For the believer in any threatening era, He is the peace in the threat, not just from it.

Application

Verse 2's precision is for skeptics and saints alike. The Ruler's town was named centuries before His birth. Trust the One whose coming was that specific.

Christ in this chapter

Micah 5:2 is the prophecy the wise men were sent by. Bethlehem received the eternal ruler. The chapter's peace is His person — present with His people through every Assyrian.
