Matthew 8 — Lord, I Am Not Worthy That Thou Shouldest Come Under My Roof
Jesus cleanses a leper — I will; be thou clean. The centurion of Capernaum sends for healing for his servant — speak the word only. Jesus marvels — I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. He heals Peter's mother-in-law; many at evening. He himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses. A scribe says he will follow — the foxes have holes, but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head. He stills the storm. He delivers two demoniacs at Gadara; the swine plunge into the sea; the city begs Him to depart.

A Roman officer's humility shames Israel's pride. I am not worthy — he understood authority better than the religious did. He saw that Christ's word over distance was as powerful as His presence in the room.
Speak the word only. He knew, from his own military life, that authority issues orders and orders are obeyed. He recognized in Christ a higher chain of command, where the word itself accomplishes the work.
A reply to a would-be disciple's confident vow. Christ refuses to let the man join Him on a misunderstanding. Following Him means homelessness in this world's sense.
The Son of man hath not where to lay his head. The owner of the universe owns no bed. His followers must reckon with the cost before they enlist.
Why are ye fearful? The first rebuke is to them, not the storm. Fear in His presence is the deeper problem than wind on the lake.
A great calm. Instant, not gradual. The Christ who stilled this storm is the One present in yours; the calm He gives is often inward before the outward storm subsides.
Verse 8 names the deepest dignity of faith — I am not worthy. The centurion did not advance arguments for why he merited an answer; he leaned on Christ's authority alone. When you pray, the access is not by earned worthiness but by the same authority the centurion confessed.
Matthew 8 stacks Christ's authority — over leprosy, distance, fever, weather, demons. The chapter exists to make the question of Mark 4:41 unavoidable: what manner of man is this? Matthew's answer is Emmanuel — God with us — exercising the authority of the Creator over every domain He made.
Touched him. Lepers were untouchable by law. Jesus broke the taboo to heal. Where ordinary contact would have made another unclean, Christ made the unclean clean by His own holiness.
I will. The leper had said if thou wilt. Christ answers the conditional with the resolve. He was not reluctant to heal; He was ready.
