John 5 — The Father Loveth the Son, and Sheweth Him All Things
A pool at Bethesda; a man who had been ill thirty-eight years. Wilt thou be made whole? Rise, take up thy bed, and walk. It was the sabbath. The Jews persecute Him. My Father worketh hitherto, and I work. The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do. The Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son. He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life. The hour is coming when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God. Four witnesses to Christ — John, the works, the Father, the Scriptures. Ye search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

I can of mine own self do nothing. Christ's Son-of-God dependence stated. He does not operate as an independent agent; everything is in alignment with the Father.
Just judgment. The judgment Christ exercises is right because His will is fused with the Father's. There is no rogue judgment from heaven.
They are they which testify of me. The Bible's purpose stated by its Author. Scripture is not an end in itself; it points to Christ.
A check on every reading of the Bible. If your reading does not bring you to Him, you have missed what the text was for. The point of the Word is the Person.
Verse 39 reorders your Bible reading. The aim is not information but encounter with Christ. Every passage, properly read, brings you to Him. If you are reading without seeing Him, slow down and ask what the text is doing to point you to its Subject.
John 5 is Christ's defense of His relationship to the Father after a Sabbath healing. He shares the Father's work, judgment, life-giving voice, and witness. The chapter's deepest claim is verse 23 — that all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. The honor due to God Himself is due to Him.
Three verbs in past tense — hath, shall not come, is passed. The believer's salvation is described as already accomplished.
Passed from death unto life. A definitive change of state. The hearing-and-believing one has crossed from the kingdom of death into the kingdom of life. The transit is over.
