Hosea 3 — Go Yet, Love a Woman Beloved of Her Friend, Yet an Adulteress

Summary

Go yet, love a woman beloved of her friend, yet an adulteress, according to the love of the Lord toward the children of Israel. I bought her to me for fifteen pieces of silver. Thou shalt abide for me many days. The children of Israel shall abide many days without a king, and without a sacrifice. Afterward shall the children of Israel return, and seek the Lord their God, and David their king; and shall fear the Lord and his goodness in the latter days.

Key verse

“Then said the Lord unto me, Go yet, love a woman beloved of her friend, yet an adulteress, according to the love of the Lord toward the children of Israel, who look to other gods, and love flagons of wine.”

— Hosea 3:1

Outline
  1. v.1-3 The redemption of the adulteress
  2. v.4-5 Israel's return
Verse-by-verse
1 Then said the Lord unto me, Go yet, love a woman beloved of her friend, yet an adulteress, according to the love of the Lord toward the children of Israel, who look to other gods, and love flagons of wine.

Go yet. The second command. Hosea must take her back, after she has returned to whoredom. Love does not end at the first failure.

According to the love of the Lord. The standard for the prophet's marriage is God's own love for Israel. Hosea models the divine fidelity.

Cross-references Jeremiah 3:1 · Ezekiel 16:60-63 · Romans 5:8 · 1 John 4:10
2 So I bought her to me for fifteen pieces of silver, and for an homer of barley, and an half homer of barley:

I bought her. The price of a slave. Hosea redeems his own wife from whoever owned her. The verse is the gospel in a single household.

The redemption picture. The Lord buys back the bride who sold herself away. The cost is borne by the husband.

Application

Hosea's go yet is the love story's extra mile. If God has called you back into a relationship after deep wound — and that call is from Him — verse 1 is the precedent.

Christ in this chapter

Christ bought His church when she was unfaithful (Romans 5:8). The chapter is a household-sized preview of the cross's redemption.
