Revelation 5 — Worthy Is the Lamb That Was Slain
A scroll in the right hand of Him on the throne, sealed with seven seals. No one in heaven or earth or under the earth is found worthy to open it. John weeps. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah hath prevailed. He sees a Lamb as it had been slain. The Lamb takes the scroll. The four living creatures and twenty-four elders fall down — thou art worthy to take the book. Ten thousand times ten thousand angels say Worthy is the Lamb that was slain. Every creature in heaven, earth, sea — Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him.

John was told a Lion; he sees a Lamb. The reign of the Lion is exercised through the sacrifice of the Lamb. The Lion-Lamb identity is the heart of the book.
As it had been slain. The marks of the cross are still visible. Glory has not erased the wounds; the wounds are now the credentials.
Redeemed us... by thy blood. The atonement, sung in heaven. The price paid is the reason He is worthy to open the scroll of history.
Out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation. The four-fold universality. The blood's purchase was specific and global at once — a definite people from every people.
Seven attributes ascribed to the slain Lamb. The earthly humiliation receives the heavenly exaltation. What the world considered defeat is the heaven-recognized victory.
The Christology of Revelation is built here. The Lamb-still-slain is the One the universe worships forever. The cross is not erased; it is enthroned.
Verse 9 settles where the church's songs come from. The new song is grounded in the blood. Worship that drifts from this center loses its theme. When you sing in church, remember why — thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us. The cross is the chord every Christian song carries.
Revelation 5 is the Christological heart of the book. The Lamb is at the center; the Lion is the Lamb; the slain One is the worshipped One; the redeemed are out of every nation. No paragraph in Scripture binds atonement, sovereignty, and worship more tightly. Heaven sings what every Christian on earth is learning to sing.
John weeps that none can open the scroll. The elder comforts — the Lion has prevailed. The fulfillment of Genesis 49:9 and Isaiah 11:1, the Messianic conqueror.
Hath prevailed. Past tense. The victory is already won. The opening of the scroll is the working out of an accomplished triumph.
