Psalms 42 — As the Hart Panteth After the Water Brooks
As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God. My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God? Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance. Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts.

Self-talk in the dark. The psalmist preaches to his own soul. The disciplines is not denying the downcast feeling but addressing the soul that holds it.
Hope thou in God. The command to the soul. Sometimes the most pastoral voice you hear must be your own toward yourself.
Verse 5 is a discipline. When you are cast down, ask the soul why? and preach hope to it. The voice that needs to speak to your soul is sometimes yours.
Christ is the water for the thirsty soul (John 7:37-38). The hart's panting is met in the river of life that flows from Him.
A picture of urgent thirst. The deer in summer drought, gasping for water. So the soul for God.
The verse honors the desire. The longing itself is part of the relationship.
