2 Corinthians 11 — Satan Himself Is Transformed Into an Angel of Light
Paul, jealous over the Corinthians with godly jealousy, fears lest as the serpent beguiled Eve, their minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ — for they bear easily with one who preaches another Jesus, another spirit, another gospel. The false apostles are deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ; and no marvel, for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Forced into foolish boasting, Paul recites not his triumphs but his sufferings: stripes, prisons, shipwrecks, perils of waters, robbers, his own countrymen, the heathen, the city, the wilderness, the sea, false brethren — and beside all, the daily care of all the churches. If I must needs glory, I will glory of the things which concern mine infirmities.

Eden's strategy is still in service: not open assault but subtle corruption — questioning, complicating, adding. The target then and now is the mind's simple devotion.
The simplicity that is in Christ — single-hearted, uncomplicated allegiance. Error rarely says "leave Christ"; it says "Christ and," "Christ plus," until the center quietly moves.
Satan's most effective disguise is not darkness but counterfeit light — religion, morality, even ministry. The devil quotes Scripture (Matthew 4:6) and staffs pulpits (v. 15).
Therefore brightness is not proof of truth. Teachers must be tested by the gospel they preach (v. 4), not by the radiance of their presentation. The more luminous the error, the more dangerous.
Forced to compare credentials, Paul submits a résumé of scars. Where the false apostles counted conquests, he counts costs. The authentic ministry is proved by what a man will suffer for Christ, not by what he gains.
Most of this catalog appears nowhere in Acts — five scourgings, three shipwrecks, a night and day in the deep. Luke recorded a fraction; heaven recorded it all.
The boast inverted. Paul ends his forced foolishness by selecting weakness as his only trophy — culminating in the basket let down the Damascus wall (v. 33), the memory of his most undignified escape.
This is the thesis 12:9 will complete: infirmity is where the power of Christ rests. The man who can boast of his weaknesses has been freed from the tyranny of his image.
Guard the simplicity that is in Christ (v. 3). Audit what has been added to your faith lately — teachers, systems, emphases — and test each against the simple gospel (v. 4): same Jesus, same Spirit, same gospel? Remember verse 14 when evaluating impressive ministries: brightness proves nothing; fidelity proves everything.
The chapter turns on devotion to Christ as a bride to one husband (v. 2). The false apostles offered another Jesus; Paul's sufferings authenticated his attachment to the true One — the Bridegroom who first suffered everything in the catalog, and more, for His bride.
The church is betrothed to Christ; the present age is the engagement; the presentation comes at His appearing. Paul sees himself as the friend of the Bridegroom guarding the bride's fidelity.
Godly jealousy — jealousy for another's devotion to Christ, not for one's own following. The pastor's grief at wandering sheep is a holy emotion, borrowed from the jealous love of God.
