Hebrews 5 — Though He Were a Son, Yet Learned He Obedience
Every high priest taken from among men is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices; he can have compassion on the ignorant. He must offer for his own sins as well as for the people's. No man taketh this honour unto himself but he that is called of God, as Aaron. Christ also did not glorify Himself but was called by the Father — Thou art my Son, today have I begotten thee. He learned obedience by the things which He suffered. Being made perfect, He became the author of eternal salvation. Of whom we have many things to say, but ye are dull of hearing. Ye need to be taught again the first principles. Strong meat is for them of full age.

Though he were a Son. The sonship did not exempt Him from the school of obedience. The eternal Son entered the experience of obeying-under-pressure that finite humans live in.
Learned obedience by the things which he suffered. Not because He had any disobedience to unlearn, but because obedience-tested-by-suffering is a category that had to be lived to be borne for us.
Made perfect. Brought to the completion of His mission through suffering. Not morally improved — He was sinless — but vocationally fulfilled by enduring to the end.
Eternal salvation unto all them that obey him. The obedience here is the obedience of faith — submission to His person as Lord and Saviour. Salvation flows to those who bow to Him.
A rebuke to long-time believers who never grew. They should have been teachers; they are still in the kindergarten. Time in church without growth is its own warning.
The verse asks every veteran reader of the Bible: do you eat solid food now, or are you still on milk? Spiritual childhood beyond a certain point is failure, not innocence.
Verse 12 is a check on long-time church attendance. Years in the faith are not the same as growth in the faith. Inventory honestly — are you eating strong meat now, or have you been on milk for a decade? The cure is not more milk but mastication: chew the hard passages; live the hard obediences.
The chapter sets Christ's priesthood against the Aaronic backdrop. The qualifications are met in Him — compassion (because He suffered), call (by the Father, in Psalm 2 and 110), and perfection (through His own obedience unto death). He is the priest Hebrews will explore for chapters yet.
Strong crying and tears. Gethsemane in summary. The Saviour's prayers were not polished compositions; they were anguished cries.
Heard in that he feared. He was heard — not by deliverance from the cross but by sustenance through it. God's yes to prayer is not always the lifting of the cup but the strength to drink it.
