Hebrews 9 — Now Once In the End of the World Hath He Appeared to Put Away Sin
The first tabernacle had ordinances — the candlestick, the table, the showbread, the holiest of all with the ark, the golden censer. The Holy Ghost signified that the way into the holiest was not yet made manifest while the first tabernacle was yet standing. Christ being come a high priest, by His own blood He entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. The blood of bulls and goats sanctifieth the flesh; how much more shall the blood of Christ purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God. A testament must be confirmed by death. Christ is now to appear in the presence of God for us. Once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. Unto them that look for Him He shall appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

Purge your conscience. Outward ceremony could clean garments; only Christ's blood reaches the inside. The conscience is where guilt lives; the blood is what removes it.
To serve the living God. The cleansing is for service. We are not merely forgiven; we are released into service. The Christian conscience freed from accusation is the conscience set free for obedience.
Without shedding of blood is no remission. The Old Testament axiom Hebrews enforces. Sin cannot be wished away; it must be paid for in life. The cross is therefore not optional but necessary.
The modern instinct to handle sin therapeutically misreads the universe. Sin demands blood; the believer's only refuge is the blood that has been shed by Christ.
Appointed unto men once to die. The universal appointment. No second chances after the grave; no reincarnation, no annihilation, no purgatorial pre-judgment.
After this the judgment. The order is fixed. Whatever a person has done with Christ in life is the basis of the verdict in judgment. Settle it now.
Once offered. The atonement was not a serial procedure. One offering, finished. The repetition of the old sacrifices is replaced by the once-for-all of Christ.
Unto them that look for him. The criterion for His salvation-bringing second coming — looking for Him. The Christian lives in expectation.
Verse 27 forbids procrastination. Once to die, but after this the judgment. You cannot settle accounts after the grave. Whatever needs to be settled with God must be settled now. The chapter's good news is that the Mediator who can settle it has already paid the blood-price.
Hebrews 9 is the chapter of the better sacrifice. Christ's own blood, His own self, His own work — once, and forever. The Old Testament shadows fall away; the substance is here. The chapter ends with the dual hope — He was once offered; He shall appear a second time. Between the two comings the church lives.
By his own blood. The animal sacrifices borrowed creaturely blood; Christ supplied His own. Priest, victim, blood — all in one Person.
Eternal redemption. The result is not provisional. A definite people were eternally bought. The transaction is closed.
