Psalms 79 — Help Us, O God of Our Salvation, For the Glory of Thy Name

Summary

O God, the heathen are come into thine inheritance. The dead bodies of thy servants have they given to be meat. We are become a reproach to our neighbours. Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of thy name: and deliver us, and purge away our sins, for thy name's sake. So we thy people and sheep of thy pasture will give thee thanks for ever.

Key verse

“Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of thy name: and deliver us, and purge away our sins, for thy name's sake.”

— Psalm 79:9

Outline
  1. v.1-7 The desolation
  2. v.8-13 For thy name's sake
Verse-by-verse
9 Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of thy name: and deliver us, and purge away our sins, for thy name's sake.

For the glory of thy name... for thy name's sake. The motive doubled. The chapter's deepest plea is for His honor.

A pattern for prayer. Ground requests in God's name; the answer is more secure.

Prayer for the Sake of God's Name

Application

Verse 9 is the highest motive for prayer. Ask for His name's sake; the appeal is to His honor, not your comfort.

Christ in this chapter

Prayer in Christ's name is the New Testament continuation of this pattern. His name carries the weight of His person.
