Psalms 17 — Keep Me As the Apple of the Eye

Summary

Hear the right, O Lord, attend unto my cry. Let my sentence come forth from thy presence. Thou hast tried mine heart; thou hast visited me in the night. Concerning the works of men, by the word of thy lips I have kept me from the paths of the destroyer. Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings. Arise, O Lord, disappoint him. As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.

Key verse

“Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings,”

— Psalm 17:8

8 Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings,

Apple of the eye. The pupil — most protected, most precious. Treat me, O God, as something most carefully guarded.

Shadow of thy wings. Maternal protection imagery. Hide me as a hen hides her chicks.

15 As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.

Behold thy face... satisfied... with thy likeness. The believer's ultimate hope. Not stuff; not status; the face of God.

The resurrection morning glimpsed. When I awake — from death's sleep. The first sight will be His likeness.

Christ in this chapter

The believer beholds God's face in Christ (2 Corinthians 4:6). The likeness with which we shall be satisfied is the Son's glory shared with His own.
