Hosea 5 — I Will Go and Return to My Place, Till They Acknowledge Their Offence
Hear ye this, O priests. They have deeply revolted. The pride of Israel doth testify to his face. They will not frame their doings to turn unto their God. Then went Ephraim to the Assyrian, and sent to king Jareb: yet could he not heal you. For I will be unto Ephraim as a lion. I will tear and go away; I will take away, and none shall rescue him. I will go and return to my place, till they acknowledge their offence, and seek my face: in their affliction they will seek me early.

I will go and return. God withdraws to bring His people back. The absence of His felt presence is a means of grace.
In their affliction they will seek me. Sometimes the suffering is what produces the seeking. The verse honors the discipline of withdrawal.
Verse 13 corrects today's rush to the wrong help. When the soul is sick, do not consult the Assyrian first. Bring it to the Lord; secondary helps follow.
Christ is the great Physician (Matthew 9:12). The chapter's sick people miss Him by running to the world's doctors. The cure was offered; the patient ran elsewhere.
When sick, Israel ran to the wrong doctor. Foreign alliances cannot heal what only God can. The verse names the misdiagnosis.
A perennial misstep. When the soul is sick, the world is consulted before God. The wrong physician deepens the disease.
