Concerning the collection for the saints — upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store. I will come unto you, when I shall pass through Macedonia. A great door and many adversaries together. The two go in tandem; opposition often signals open doors.
A perspective for missions. The intense opposition is sometimes the proof that the door God opened is large. Do not retreat at the first resistance.
Four imperatives. Watch — be alert. Stand fast — do not drift. Quit you like men — act with courage. Be strong — God-supplied vigor.
A soldier's charge. Christian life is depicted as a campaign requiring vigilance, steadiness, courage, strength.
Maranatha. Aramaic — Our Lord, come. The closing prayer of the Aramaic-speaking early church. The Lord comes; let Him.
A stark test. Love for Christ is the test of belonging. Not formal religion, not church attendance — love for the Lord Jesus.
Verse 13 is your morning charge. Four words you can pray over yourself daily — watch, stand, quit you like men, be strong. In the Spirit, these are not bravado; they are the believer's ordinary equipment. Take them on.
1 Corinthians closes with Maranatha — our Lord, come. The whole letter's work on Christ's body, the Supper of His remembrance, the resurrection of His people lands here. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ — that is the closing note, the same note that runs through every chapter.
A pattern for Christian giving. First day of the week — Sunday, the day of resurrection. Lay by — set apart. As God hath prospered — proportionate.
Regular, proportionate, prepared giving. The verse rules out the lump-sum afterthought and trains the cheerful giver.
