Hosea 14 — I Will Heal Their Backsliding
O Israel, return unto the Lord thy God; for thou hast fallen by thine iniquity. Take with you words, and turn to the Lord: say unto him, Take away all iniquity. I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him. I will be as the dew unto Israel. Ephraim shall say, What have I to do any more with idols? I have heard him, and observed him: I am like a green fir tree. From me is thy fruit found. Who is wise, and he shall understand these things? The ways of the Lord are right.
“I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him.”
— Hosea 14:4
- v.1-3 Return with words
- v.4-8 I will heal their backsliding
- v.9 The ways of the Lord are right
A closing summons. The wise will discern; the transgressors will trip on the same paths the just walk.
The chapter's ending puts the question back to the reader. Who is wise? The book's harvest is the wise reader's response.
Verse 4 is the verse for the backslider. I will heal. Whatever your fall, the prophet who took back Gomer wrote this. The grace is real. Return.
The healing of backsliding is accomplished at the cross. Christ's blood heals what idols broke; His resurrection ends the chapter's long journey from adultery to restoration.

I will heal their backsliding. The pattern of God's gospel — He heals what we have broken. The verse is for every backslider who fears he is past help.
Love them freely. Without cost to the loved one. The freeness is God's. The cost was Christ's.
