Psalms 46 — God Is Our Refuge and Strength

Summary

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea. There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God. The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved. Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.

Key verse

“Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.”

— Psalm 46:10

Outline
  1. v.1-3 God our refuge
  2. v.4-7 The city of God
  3. v.8-11 Be still and know
Verse-by-verse
1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

A very present help. Not distant, not occasional. The verse cures the lie that God shows up late.

A foundational verse for crisis. Memorize for emergencies; speak before fear sets.

Cross-references Hebrews 13:6 · Psalm 91:2 · Deuteronomy 33:27 · Nahum 1:7
10 Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.

Be still. The cessation of striving. The verse commands quiet — and gives the reason: God is God.

A discipline for the anxious. The stillness is for knowing; the knowing is of His sovereignty.

Cross-references Exodus 14:14 · Habakkuk 2:20 · Zechariah 2:13 · Isaiah 30:15

Verse 10 is the discipline for today's noise. Be still. The stillness is not laziness; it is the posture of one who knows who God is. Practice it.

Christ in this chapter

Christ stilled the storm with a word (Mark 4:39). The God of the psalm is the Christ who is master of the very forces v.1 protects His people from.
