Daniel 12 — They That Be Wise Shall Shine as the Brightness of the Firmament

Summary

At that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was. Many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. They that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever. Shut up the words. Many shall be purified. Go thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of the days.

2 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.

The clearest Old Testament statement of the two-fold resurrection — to life or to contempt. Both are everlasting.

The verse forbids any soft reading of the final state. Both destinies are real and lasting; both await the resurrection.

Turn many to righteousness. The evangelist's eternal honor. Those who lead others to Christ shine as stars forever.

A motivation for soul-winning. The reward outlasts every earthly accolade.

13 But go thou thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of the days.

Stand in thy lot at the end of the days. Daniel's personal hope. He would rest in death and stand in resurrection.

The verse closes the book pastorally. Whatever the long prophetic vista, Daniel personally is held — and so is every believer.

Verse 3 is a motivation for evangelism. Whatever your job today, the only work that yields for ever and ever honor is turning people to righteousness. Spend some effort on the work that shines forever.

Christ in this chapter

The resurrection Daniel sees from afar is the resurrection Christ secured. He is the firstfruits (1 Corinthians 15:20); Daniel will stand in his lot at the end because of the work Christ would do at the cross.
