Psalms 88 — Lover and Friend Hast Thou Put Far From Me
O Lord God of my salvation, I have cried day and night before thee. My soul is full of troubles: and my life draweth nigh unto the grave. Thou hast laid me in the lowest pit. Thy wrath lieth hard upon me. Why castest thou off my soul? Lover and friend hast thou put far from me, and mine acquaintance into darkness.

Verse 18 honors the day that does not end in light. The psalm authorizes the believer's prayer that does not yet resolve. Sometimes faithful prayer ends with the darkness still present.
Christ knew the put far from of friends in His own darkest hour (Mark 14:50). The psalm anticipates the lonely cross.
The psalm ends in darkness — uniquely among the Psalms. No resolution; the chapter lets the night stand.
A psalm for the believer in unrelieved depression. Sometimes the inspired psalmist ends without a sunrise. The chapter dignifies that experience.
