Psalms 92 — It Is a Good Thing To Give Thanks Unto the Lord
It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High: to shew forth thy lovingkindness in the morning, and thy faithfulness every night. A brutish man knoweth not. The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon. Those that be planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing.
“It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High.”
— Psalm 92:1
- v.1-9 Praise morning and night
- v.10-15 The flourishing righteous
Two images — palm tree (fruitful, beautiful) and cedar (tall, enduring). The righteous get both.
A perspective on long Christian life. Endurance is not stagnation; it is multiplied fruit and height.
Fruit in old age. The elderly believer's honor. Decline is not the end of usefulness.
A hope for the gray-haired Christian. The fruit continues even as the body slows.
Verse 1 is a daily discipline. It is a good thing. Even when you do not feel like it, the giving of thanks is good. Practice it.
Christ is the tree of life; those planted in His house flourish. The chapter's fruitfulness flows from union with Him.

It is a good thing. Not a duty alone — a good thing. Thanksgiving and praise are gifts to the praiser.
A discipline. Even when not feeling it, give thanks; the goodness of the act tends to produce feeling.
