Ecclesiastes 5 — Better Is It That Thou Shouldest Not Vow
Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God, and be more ready to hear than to give the sacrifice of fools. Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God. For God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few. When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it. Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay. He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver. Sweet is the sleep of a labouring man.

The treadmill of greed. Whatever you accumulate, the desire stays one step ahead. Money does not satisfy money-love.
The verse forbids hope that more income will solve the discontent. The hunger is structural.
Verse 10 ends one of life's false hopes. The desire for more money does not end with more money. The cure is contentment with God's portion (v.18).
Christ's words are few and weighty — no wasted syllable. The chapter's discipline of speech is fulfilled in Him who, when accused, answered nothing (Matthew 27:14).
Let thy words be few. A check on wordy religion. God is in heaven; you are on earth. The distance commends restraint.
The verse is not against passionate prayer; it is against careless prayer. Weigh before you speak.
