Psalms 50 — Call Upon Me In the Day of Trouble

Summary

The mighty God, even the Lord, hath spoken. Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God hath shined. Hear, O my people. I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices. For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills. If I were hungry, I would not tell thee. Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High: and call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me. Whoso offereth praise glorifieth me.

Key verse

“And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.”

— Psalm 50:15

Outline
  1. v.1-6 God appears
  2. v.7-15 Sacrifices and thanksgiving
  3. v.16-23 Rebuke of the wicked
Verse-by-verse
10 For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills.

Cattle upon a thousand hills. God's ownership. He is not impoverished by withholding from Him; He is not enriched by your contribution.

A check on transactional religion. God does not need the sacrifice; He desires the heart.

15 And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.

The promise of the chapter. Call... deliver... glorify. The sequence honors both the caller's need and the Deliverer's honor.

A verse to inscribe in memory. When the day of trouble comes, the verse names the protocol.
