Psalms 91 — He That Dwelleth In the Secret Place of the Most High

Summary

He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust. A thousand shall fall at thy side. There shall no evil befall thee. Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him.

Key verse

— Psalm 91:1-2

Verse-by-verse
1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

Dwelleth... abide. Two verbs of permanence. Not visiting — dwelling.

A verse for the daily discipline of secret prayer. The secret place is entered by deliberate withdrawal.

11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.

Quoted by the devil at Christ's temptation (Matthew 4:6). Christ refused to misuse it; the believer trusts it without testing.

A promise of angelic guardianship. The verse honors the believer's safety in His ways.

14 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.

Set his love upon me. The condition of the chapter's promises. The love is real and acted upon.

Known my name. Not heard of — known. The relational verb is intimacy.
