Psalms 24 — Who Is This King of Glory?

Summary

The earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord? He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart. This is the generation of them that seek him. Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle.

Key verse

“The earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.”

— Psalm 24:1

Outline
  1. v.1-2 The earth is the Lord's
  2. v.3-6 Who shall ascend?
  3. v.7-10 The King of glory
Verse-by-verse
1 The earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.

The deepest ownership. Not the title-holder, not the government, not the conqueror — the Lord owns the earth and everything in it.

A check on every claim to absolute property. You are a steward of His.

Cross-references 1 Corinthians 10:26 · Exodus 19:5 · Psalm 50:10-12 · Deuteronomy 10:14
3 Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord? or who shall stand in his holy place?

The question of access. Who gets in? The next verse names the qualifications — clean hands, pure heart.

A standard no one fully meets — pointing to the One whose hands and heart were perfectly clean.

7 Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.

The triumphant entry. Often read at Christ's ascension. The everlasting doors open to receive the returning King.

A picture for every Christian heart. Open the door; let the King come in.
