Daniel 8 — The Vision of the Ram and the Goat

Summary

A vision appeared unto Daniel after that which appeared unto me at the first. I saw a ram which had two horns; he pushed westward. A he goat came from the west on the face of the whole earth, and touched not the ground. The he goat waxed very great. A little horn came forth out of one of them, which waxed exceeding great. Gabriel — Understand, O son of man: for at the time of the end shall be the vision. The ram is Media and Persia; the goat is Grecia. At the latter time a king of fierce countenance shall stand up. He shall be broken without hand.

Key verse

“So he came near where I stood: and when he came, I was afraid, and fell upon my face: but he said unto me, Understand, O son of man: for at the time of the end shall be the vision.”

— Daniel 8:17

Outline
  1. v.1-14 The vision
  2. v.15-27 Gabriel's interpretation
Verse-by-verse
25 And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand.

Broken without hand. No human strikes the final blow. Heaven ends the tyrant. The pattern recurs in history; no oppressor outruns it.

The Prince of princes. Christ Himself. The pattern of tyrants opposing Him ends the same way every time.

27 And I Daniel fainted, and was sick certain days; afterward I rose up, and did the king's business; and I was astonished at the vision, but none understood it.

Fainted... did the king's business. Prophetic insight does not exempt from daily duty. After the vision, the laundry.

A model for visionary faithfulness. Whatever God shows you privately, keep doing the work He has assigned publicly.

Application

Verse 27 corrects the dreamer. Daniel had a stunning vision and went back to his desk. Spiritual insight is no excuse to neglect the king's business assigned to you.

Christ in this chapter

The Prince of princes against whom the little horn rises is Christ. Every age's anti-Christ figures will fail before His coming, broken without hand.
