The Abercius Inscription

Abercius, a bishop in Phrygia, composed his own gravestone before AD 216 — often called the queen of early Christian inscriptions. In carefully veiled language it describes his travels to Rome and across the East, a faith that everywhere set before him “a fish from the spring” with bread and wine, and “Paul” as his companion. The coded imagery — the fish for Christ, the shared meal for the Eucharist — lets a Christian read it plainly while a passer-by saw only a pious epitaph. It is among the earliest datable Christian inscriptions, a stone witness to a self-aware, connected church around AD 200.
