Psalms 89 — I Have Made a Covenant With My Chosen

Summary

I will sing of the mercies of the Lord for ever. Mercy shall be built up for ever: thy faithfulness shalt thou establish in the very heavens. I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn unto David my servant. The heavens shall praise thy wonders, O Lord. Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face. My mercy will I keep for him for evermore, and my covenant shall stand fast with him. Blessed be the Lord for evermore. Amen, and Amen.

Key verse

“Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face.”

— Psalm 89:14

Outline
  1. v.1-18 God's covenant with David
  2. v.19-37 Promises to David's son
  3. v.38-52 The lament of broken promises
Verse-by-verse
14 Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face.

Four foundational attributes of God's government. Justice, judgment, mercy, truth. Each one stands; together they constitute His throne.

A check on misreading God. He is not just mercy without truth, or judgment without mercy. All four together.

34 My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.

God's self-binding. He cannot un-promise. The verse is the gospel's ground — God's word is His bond.

A comfort for the doubting. The promises God has spoken are not provisional.

Christ in this chapter

The Davidic covenant finds its yes in Christ (Acts 13:32-34). The psalm's long covenant arc lands in Him.
