The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records that around AD 883 King Alfred of Wessex sent gifts to Rome and, remarkably, on “to India, to Saint Thomas.” Whether the envoys ever reached the Malabar coast is debated, but the entry shows that even far-off England took it for granted that a shrine of the apostle stood in India — the Thomas tradition reaching, in writing, to the other end of the known world.
