A Bengali carpenter, Krishna Pal dislocated his arm and came to the Serampore missionaries for help — and left having found their faith. In December 1800, after William Carey's mission had laboured seven years without a single Indian convert, Krishna Pal was baptised in the Hooghly, crossing caste lines to do it. He became a preacher and a writer of Bengali hymns — the long-awaited first fruit of the Baptist mission in Bengal.
