Squeezed between rival overlords and Arab competitors in the pearl trade, the Parava fishing communities of the far south sought Portuguese protection — and in tens of thousands accepted baptism in 1535–37, years before Francis Xavier ever arrived. It was Xavier who then walked their villages catechising a people who had come to the faith as whole communities rather than one by one. Their descendants remain Catholic to this day — a reminder that much of India's Christianity spread through communities, not lone converts.
