Psalms 33 — Sing Unto Him a New Song
Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous: for praise is comely for the upright. Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise. For the word of the Lord is right; and all his works are done in truth. By the word of the Lord were the heavens made. He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap. The Lord bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought. Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord. The Lord looketh from heaven. Our soul waiteth for the Lord: he is our help and our shield.
“Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.”
— Psalm 33:12
- v.1-3 Sing a new song
- v.4-11 God's word and works
- v.12-22 Blessed is the nation
A blessing on the people whose God is the Lord. The verse names what is most precious to a nation — not wealth, not power, but the Lord as their God.
A guide for prayer for nations. The deepest blessing one can ask for any country.
Verse 12 frames national prayer. Pray not first for prosperity, peace, or power; pray that the nation's God would be the Lord. From that everything else flows.
The Word that created (v.6) is the same Word that became flesh (John 1:14). Christ is the creating speech and the saving Word.

Creation by spoken word. By the word of the Lord. John 1:1-3 picks this up — the Word made all things.
A check on materialist explanations. The fundamental thing is speech; matter answered the speech.
