The coastal ridge where the prophet Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal to call down fire, and won. Carmel is a real, prominent range running to the sea by Haifa; the traditional spot of the contest, el-Muhraqa ('the burning'), is marked today by a Carmelite monastery with a sweeping view over the Jezreel Valley.
